There is a rich history in the area that dates back to the early 19th century to the time of the lake's first settlers, Henry Phoenix and Col. Samuel F. Phoenix. In 1847, prior to Wisconsin attaining statehood, the Mabie brothers proprietors of the U.S. Olympic Circus, chose Delavan as a home for the winter. In America, this was the largest traveling show at the time and from there, in 1871, The P.T. Barnum Circus, also known as "The Greatest Show on Earth" was founded. This exciting history was recognized by the U.S. Postal Service, who, in 1966, chose Delavan for the first release of the American Circus Commemorative Postage Stamp. Today, Delavan's colorful past is proudly on display across the community through 19 murals, each depicting a story from yesteryears.
